Doctor Edward Ackerman

Ed was born in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, January 27, 1935 the first and only child of Michael and Elena Zigas, immigrants of Lithuania.

Edward was baptized at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church on November 17, 1935.

In 1948 Ed moved with his mother and step-father, Peter Ackerman to Grosse Point, Michigan, where he graduated from Grosse Point High school in June 1951.

In 1957, Ed graduated from The University of Michigan with a degree in Physics. While selling shoes at Jacobson’s in Ann Arbor his friend encouraged him to pursue a medical career because of his gregarious personality.

In 1962 he received his M.D. Degree from Wayne State University of Medicine.

On August 11, 1962 he made the wisest decision of his life and married Barbara Lou Burger, at St. James Lutheran Church.

Barbara and Ed then moved to Los Angeles for his year internship at LA County Hospital. Barbara taught school in Glendale, CA.

They moved back to Grosse Point and on June 8, 1963, James Edward was born.

During his four year of residency in urology at Wayne state two more children were born: Jeanne Louise on November 4, 1964 and Douglas William on August 15, 1967. On July 9, 1970, Gregory Glenn was born completing Ed’s family.

In June 1968 Ed moved his family to Winter Park, Florida where he began his 32 year practice of urology; being one of the Founders of Winter Park Urology Associates. During his Medical career he was President of the Orange County Medical Society, and Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Florida Hospital. Also, during this time, He and his physician partners were the first private physicians permitted to perform kidney transplants in the State of Florida.

Besides his busy medical practice Ed found time to fly, sail to the Caribbean, and golf worldwide. He also spent countless hours on computer programming.

Ed was a devoted family man when participating in the activities of his children: sports events, recitals, confirmations, trips and travels.

Being blessed with so many abilities Ed liked projects! Darkroom, deck, skateboard ramps, sheds, plumbing, Doug’s cork floor, Jim’s porch, the list is endless.

Ed retired from active medical practice in June 2000.

Still, he remained very active.

Each summer Barb and Ed drove to Pentwater, Michigan and spent summers there. They welcomed their growing family which includes 10 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Ed continued to golf, Play Bridge, boat and work on his computer.

Barbara and Ed celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Pentwater on August 11, 2012 with all their family and friends.

In 2010 Barb and Ed sold their Winter Park home of 38 years and moved to the Lutheran Haven in Oviedo. Ed continued golfing and playing bridge with new friends.

His three youngest grandchildren attend St. Luke’s Lutheran School, and that kept him busy.

In 2011 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease with a slow but steady decline.

On June 16, 2017, the Lord called Edward Home to Himself in Heaven where he is now with Jesus.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 2021 W. S.R. 426, Oviedo, Florida 32765.
